What documents do Swiss citizens need to get married in Thailand?

Swiss citizens need various original documents to get married in Thailand. After initial contact, we will provide you with detailed information about the documents in question.

Your future wife will also need various documents to get married in Thailand. Which documents, and how many, are required varies from person to person. You will receive detailed information about this after an initial contact. Your future wife's original documents must be translated into German!

Since a marriage entered into in Thailand must also be registered in Switzerland, the Thai documents must be translated into German for the Swiss authorities. If both couples' documents are correct and complete, the future spouses can submit their complete dossier to Switzerland. After the documents have been submitted, it takes approximately two months for the relevant authorities to issue the certificate of no capacity to marry. Once the certificate of no capacity to marry has been received at the Swiss Embassy in Bangkok, the "Marriage Application" can also be applied for there. Only with this document can a civil marriage take place here in Thailand.

After the civil ceremony, the bride must complete a set administrative process, which we will explain in detail to you and your spouse, and we will, of course, accompany and support you throughout. This process begins with the name change in the Tabien Baan at your local council and ends with the special visa application (multiple copies) at the Swiss Embassy.

The applications are then sent from the Swiss embassy to Switzerland so that the marriage can be officially registered with the authorities there as well. The registration process usually takes 6-8 weeks. Once the marriage has been registered everywhere, the Thai wife can enter Switzerland without any problems.

With the complete marriage package including entry into Switzerland, your wife will receive a residence permit "B" from the residents' registration office, which is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. This permit also grants her the right to look for work in Switzerland.

Cultural customs at a traditional wedding in Thailand

After the civil ceremony, it is, of course, up to the bride and groom to decide how and where they wish to celebrate their marriage with their loved ones. However, the local wedding ceremony is of great importance for the bride's reputation. As many guests as possible should be invited, and nine monks are a must. Cultural rituals are of great importance when getting married in Thailand.

The traditional "bride price" paid to the parents is intended to save the bride's face, as the bride's value determines the family's image within the village community. The amount of this "bride price" depends heavily on the family's social status. The bride's education and age also play a role. Of course, the husband's financial means should not be forgotten. After all, the prospective bride should not be in financial difficulties before the marriage is even concluded. A definitive guideline cannot be given, but we can provide recommendations.

It's advisable to settle financial matters in advance to prevent misunderstandings and disappointment on the part of the bride. Mixed marriages are generally subject to greater stress due to the different cultures. Good fortune and unhappiness often lie close together. A precise plan—approved by both partners beforehand—helps prevent many things that could later separate you. A great deal of patience and the willingness to learn your partner's language are essential and important.

What exactly is a long-term visa D?

The long-term visa D is an entry visa that allows foreign nationals to come to Switzerland for extended periods, whether for study, work, or family reasons. It permits stays of more than 90 days and must be applied for at the Swiss embassy or consulate in the home country before entry.

Certain criteria must be met to apply for a long-term visa D. For example, applicants must provide a valid passport, proof of the purpose of their stay, sufficient financial resources, and, if applicable, confirmation of accommodation and health insurance.
