Emigrating to Thailand or just spending the winter there? My honest thoughts
Thailand – the very word evokes images of sun, sea, freedom and an easier life.
I've dreamed of it for a long time – getting away from the cold, stress and gray everyday life, into palm trees, warm water and a life with more ease.
But at some point the big question came up:
Do I really want to emigrate – or is it enough to simply overwinter each year?
Many people ask themselves this question, and to be honest: I couldn't answer it clearly for myself for a long time either.
The dream of a complete restart
Moving abroad Sounds like freedom.
No more winter, no high bills, no constant pressure.
In Thailand, you can live with much less money – and often with a much higher quality of life.
But emigration also means:
You leave a lot behind. Family, friends, security.
Suddenly you are in a different system, with different rules, a different language, a different culture.
That sounds romantic – but it can also be lonely at times.
Overwintering: The safe option
Overwintering feels like a compromise – but a pretty good one.
People escape the European winter and spend the best months of the year in Thailand.
People enjoy sunshine, affordable living, and good food –
And when you've had enough, you simply fly back.
Not a final goodbye.
Not a radical decision.
But that's exactly where the disadvantage lies:
You live somehow between two worlds.
You're never quite here – and never quite there.
What truly feels right?
I realized:
Many people dream of Emigrate, But what they really mean is that they want to escape from everyday life.
Not everyone who loves Thailand has to leave everything behind.
And not everyone who emigrates ends up truly happy.
Some come back after a few months.
Others stay forever.
Both are okay.
My personal truth
I love Thailand – and I'm always happy when I fly there.
But I'm also looking forward to returning to Switzerland after a month or two in Thailand.
As Sailor I love the sea and being on the move. I enjoy discovering new places, new cultures, new horizons. So why stay in just one place?
So my life today is a mosaic from different countries:
About five to six months in Thailand, one to two months traveling somewhere – and around four months in Switzerland spread throughout the year. That's how I feel free, connected, and at home in the world.
I'm not a typical winter visitor who flies to Thailand in the fall and returns in the spring. I'm there on and off throughout the year – with deliberate breaks in between. Even the rainy season has its own unique charm. Fewer tourists, more peace and quiet, more authentic Thailand.
Sometimes people ask me if I just can't decide yet.
But I see it differently: For me, this exact form of life is perfect at the moment.
And should that ever change, then I will Reset sails – always following the wind of my heart.
